The house had never felt this heavy before.<\/p>\n

After my mother passed, silence stopped being peaceful. It became something else\u2014dense, watchful, almost alive. That night, I couldn\u2019t sleep. I sat in the kitchen with a cup of tea gone cold, staring at nothing, listening to everything.<\/p>\n

At first, it was just the usual sounds\u2014the hum of the refrigerator, the soft creaks of an old house settling into itself. Familiar. Predictable.<\/p>\n

Safe.<\/p>\n

Then came the scratching.<\/p>\n

Soft. Slow. Deliberate.<\/p>\n

Then the scratching stopped.<\/p>\n

For a moment, there was nothing.<\/p>\n

Metal on metal.<\/p>\n

Someone was trying the window.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t move right away. I didn\u2019t turn on a light. I knew better than to make myself visible. The darkness, for once, felt like protection.<\/p>\n

Another\u00a0click<\/strong>, harder this time.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

My hands trembled as I reached for my phone. For a second, I hesitated. No one wants to feel foolish calling emergency services over a \u201cmaybe.\u201d I even tried to rationalize it\u2014it could be nothing\u2026 you\u2019re overreacting\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Then the handle shifted again.<\/p>\n

I dialed.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmergency dispatch, what is your location?\u201d the operator asked.<\/p>\n

My voice barely came out. \u201cI\u2014I think someone is trying to get into my house.\u201d<\/p>\n

She asked for details. I gave them, whispering, afraid even my voice might carry through the walls. I described the window, the alley, the sounds.<\/p>\n
